Uganda’s Gorilla Haven
Home to over half the world’s mountain gorilla population, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s most remarkable safari destinations. Nestled in southwest Uganda on the edge of the Albertine Rift, this UNESCO World Heritage Site shelters more than 600 mountain gorillas across 36 families—19 of which are habituated and open for trekking.
Bwindi isn’t just about gorillas—it’s an ancient rainforest over 25,000 years old, a rare survivor of the last Ice Age. Its deep, rich biodiversity includes: 120+ mammal species, 348 bird species, 220 butterfly species, Colorful orchids, ferns, and over 1,000 flowering plants.
Besides gorillas, you may encounter chimpanzees, baboons, colobus monkeys, and forest antelopes. For bird lovers, rare species like the African green broadbill and Shelley’s crimson wing await.
Trekking for gorillas is the park’s highlight and offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Guided treks lead you through dense jungle trails—some steep and slippery—so hiring a porter (approx. $15 USD) is recommended.
Main Trekking Sectors:
Buhoma (Northwest) – Three gorilla groups, easy treks, and great tourist infrastructure. Ruhija (Northeast) – Three groups and a range of accommodation options. Nkuringo (South) – A single but large family group. This trek is more challenging but rewarding.

Waterfall Trail – Pass lush jungle paths leading to three cascading waterfalls.
Muzabijiro Loop – Panoramic views of the Virunga Volcanoes and Western Rift Valley, plus potential monkey and chimp sightings.
